Kiev area: 836 sq.km. Only 350 sq. km or 42,3 % have been built up within the city limits. All the rest is the area of reservoirs and forest tracts and green plantings in general use.
Location: Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is built on hills overlooking the Dnepr River, in the north central part of the country.
Climate: The climate in Kiev is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. The average winter temperature varies -15 Centigrade. Summer is quite hot and dry, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The fertile black soil is well watered in spring and autumn and gets plenty of sunshine in summer.
